Secondary Roads
The County Engineer (Secondary Roads Department) is responsible for construction and maintenance of the Secondary Road System in Cedar County. Cedar County’s road system has 950 miles of roadway. This includes 139 miles of paved roads; 752 miles of gravel roads, and 59 miles of dirt roads. The system also includes over 250 bridges and large culverts.
Engineering Duties
- Design, construction, inspection and contract administration of Cedar County Secondary Road system road and bridge projects
- Department operating budget and construction program development
- Department personnel administration
- Accounting functions for Secondary roads
- Response to requests or concerns regarding roadway condition and drainage, temporary road closures, and obstructions in the right of way
- Conduct engineering studies including speed studies, road vacations, and traffic studies
- Subdivision roadway review and approval
- Entrance permit review and approval
- Permitting of utility or other work within the county road right of way
- Oversize/overweight vehicle permit issuance for county roads
- Right of way information on Cedar County roads and construction projects
- Permits for dust control on county roads
Maintenance Duties
Surface repairs and maintenance of county roads including:
- Rock resurfacing of the County's gravel roads
- Patching paved roads
- Pothole repairs
- Shoulder surfacing
- Mowing shoulders and brush cutting
- County bridge and culvert repairs
- Ditch cleaning in order to allow proper drainage
- Entrance maintenance for existing driveways on existing entrances
- Snow removal on county roads
- Road sign installation and maintenance
