BASIC REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must:
-
Be a U.S. citizen and an Iowa resident (or willing to become one upon employment)
-
Be at least 18 years old
-
Possess a valid Iowa driver’s license
-
Be able to read and write in English
-
Be free of felony convictions or crimes of moral turpitude
-
Be of good moral character, with a clean drug and alcohol record
-
Not be opposed to the use of force when appropriate
-
Hold a high school diploma or GED (meeting state minimum score requirements)
-
Have uncorrected vision of at least 20/100 in each eye, correctable to 20/20 with normal color vision
-
Have normal hearing in both ears (as determined by a physician)
-
Successfully complete an oral interview
-
Be able to write clear, readable reports
-
Be willing to work nights, weekends, holidays, and weekdays
-
Hold (or be willing to obtain) a Basic First Aid or EMT certificate
-
Have strong communication skills and a willingness to complete required training
-
Be physically and mentally capable of performing the duties of a Correctional Officer
JOB DESCRIPTION
Correctional Officers are responsible for the safety, security, and orderly operation of the Cedar County Jail. Duties include, but are not limited to:

Supervising inmate movement and behavior
-
Conducting facility patrols and monitoring surveillance systems
-
Performing searches for contraband or weapons
-
Enforcing security procedures and maintaining facility order
-
Operating control panels, cell locks, and restraint equipment
-
Booking, releasing, and transporting inmates
-
Administering medications and providing basic medical support
-
Responding to emergencies, fire alarms, and critical incidents
-
Preparing meals, supervising kitchen operations, and ensuring cleanliness
-
Processing inmate mail, visits, grievances, and property
-
Managing inmate programs, hygiene, recreation, and work details
-
Maintaining detailed reports, logs, and inmate financial/property records
-
Participating in staff training, meetings, and continuing education
-
Testifying in court when necessary
This is a physically and mentally demanding position requiring excellent judgment, discipline, and interpersonal skills. Prior law enforcement or corrections experience is not required—training is provided.
